Austin Street Shelter
For 25 years,
Austin Street Centre has been at the forefront of helping the homeless
and poor of Dallas. Now, a nationally recognized therapeutic community,
they provide emergency shelter, food, showers, medications, counseling,
and job training programs free
of charge to those who come here..
More than 400 men, women and children receive safe shelter there each
night. More than 100 participate in their highly effective step-up
programs, including substance abuse counseling, psychotherapies, and
psycho-social counseling. These counseling services, all free of charge, are in
partnership with UT Southwestern Medical School and SMU Graduate School
of Psychology.
Their interdenominational chapel, located next door to our emergency
shelter building, provides voluntary worship services three times each
week, as well as Baptisms, weddings and funerals. Many of their clients
seek this comfort of soul as well.
Their ministry is unique in that they are privately
funded, accepting no government or United Way dollars from
any level. Each of their programs and services are provided free of
charge to their clients and at no
cost to local taxpayers. To learn more about the Austin
Street Centre, please visit them at www.austinst.org.
